Notes from the episode:
Eat breakfast, please. It matters a lot. It doesn’t have to be eggs, or a large meal, but it needs to be more than coffee. Your hormones, and brain, will thank you.
Here’s the cottage cheese bagels recipe we mentioned 🥯
Karin’s fullscript account for akkermansia (a specific probiotic), her toothpaste recs, and more - with a discount!
look for third party testing on any and all supplements. Supplements aren't FDA regulated, so quality varies wildly. Third party testing helps make sure you're getting what's on the label.
Here’s how to get better care from your doctors/ therapist/ dentists, etc:
Prepare ahead, be as specific as possible, no vague statements.
For example: When you say “I have headaches in the morning” you are likely to get written off or given a very vague and unhelpful response such as “drink more water”. When you say “My left temple throbs every morning when I wake up, it’s been going on for 2 weeks, and it’s making me late for work.” You will catch their attention. They will be able to ask questions that help you. If you give vague, you’ll get vague back.
Write down your notes ahead - no white coat nerves here! Karin reminded us not to be afraid to drive the appointment.
Set the stage at the beginning of the appointment, try one of these openers:
Hi doc, I have two questions I need your help with.
I have three main concerns for our appointment today and I need your support.
I need your full attention for this problem I’m having. I’d like you to help me uncover what is going on with [xyz] symptom.
For today’s appointment to feel successful I want to feel heard and understood, and I want to walk away with 2 possible solutions for this problem.
I want to understand this [diagnosis/test result/ change] and I need you to answer each of my questions during this appointment today.
You are the only one who gets to live in your body, so if you’re having a problem and you’re afraid to ask questions, you might be under the wrong care. You can always speak up or switch providers. They’re there to HELP you, and if it doesn’t feel that way, it’s time to move on.
It’s a great reminder as with every area of life, if you ask better questions, you’ll get better results.
